The main piece of this CD concerns a young man's adventures in London in the early 70s in the fading days of flower-power. It combines spoken word, music, song & sound-effects to tell the story like a radio play. The CD also includes original songs.

Review

This is what the fanzine "Be Glad for the Song Has No Ending" had to say about this album:

"Ziggurat are currently the West Country based duo of Steve Verge and Dave Styles. I say currently, since over the past twenty-five years or so the band has taken many forms, undulating between a duo and a sextet, but always with Steve and Dave as the beating heart of it. Both chaps are accomplished multi-instrumentalists ... and songwriters of no little distinction.

London Legs is a CD consisting of six tracks, which is actually less niggardly than it sounds, since the title track, a kaleidoscopic spoken word and instrumental piece, runs to almost half and hour. The five shorter tracks cover a range of styles and subject matter, from Dave's anthemic opener Sail On Brightly, through Steve's baroque-sounding From Rossetti, and almost Sephardic-tinctured Stars to the amiable country strumalong of Dave's Will You Need A Friend. Steve's autumnal Old Friends Now closes the album on a reflective note.

Good those these songs are - and they bear comparison with the effusions of many songsmiths of higher profile - it's the title track that commands most attention. An ambitious piece, it takes the form of a picaresque narrative recounting the adventures and misadventures of young Joe, up from Devon and finding his level in the London of 1971. It's a skillfully wrought tale, teeming with sharp detail and rueful humour; the Great Wen is at once as strange as myth and as humdrum as pigeon shit. The period is memorably evoked, but the instrumental sections conjure up the ghosts of an earlier London: a very Palmer-esque banjo piece and some thrumming ukelele seem to nod towards the heyday of the music hall.

Indeed, the various bursts of incidental music, cannily integrated into the narrative though they are, could in many cases - with suitable expansion - stand on their own. I certainly wanted to hear more of the guitar pieces Stream of Petals and Rif Mountain. The whole track pivots on a song of Steve's, Looking For The Bright Lights, which seems to have borrowed some of its melody from Diamantina Drover.

All in all, an attractive and accomplished album, well worth ordering."
